EPA Publishes Draft Strategic Plan for Public Comment
Oct 4, 2021
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced availability of the Draft FY 2022-2026 EPA Strategic Plan for public review and comment in the Federal Register. The Federal Register notice states, "The Strategic Plan includes seven strategic goals focused on protecting human health and the environment and four cross-agency strategies that describe the essential ways EPA will work to carry out its mission. The Strategic Plan also establishes long-term performance goals and FY 2022-2023 Agency Priority Goals by which EPA will hold itself accountable to monitor progress in protecting human health and the environment in collaboration with EPA's partners and stakeholders."
In a news release Friday, EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said, “I couldn’t be prouder of the Strategic Plan that EPA is putting forth today, rooted in the principles that have guided our mission since day one, and only enhanced by a new focus on justice and equity. EPA is at the center of the Biden-Harris administration’s agenda on climate change and environmental justice, and so it’s critical that our strategic direction reflect those priorities and values.”
According to the news release, EPA's plan includes a first-time strategic goal to address climate change and an unprecedented strategic goal to advance environmental justice and civil rights. EPA considers the foundation of the plan to be a renewed commitment to the three principles outlined by EPA's first Administrator, William Ruckelshaus – follow the science, follow the law, and be transparent. EPA is adding a fourth principle to advance justice and equity.
The draft strategic plan was published in the Federal Register on Friday, October 1, 2021. Comments must be received on or before November 12, 2021. EPA plans to submit the Strategic Plan to Congress in February 2022.
